GOLDEN, Colo. - Metropolitan State University of Denver swept No. 17 Colorado School of Mines 25-23, 25-22, 28-26 on Friday night in Golden, Colo. It was the sixth straight win for the Roadrunners, who improved to 9-8 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers dropped to 11-4 and 5-2.
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) had a match-high 15 kills and hit .353 to lead a powerful offensive attack that helped MSU Denver hit .282 as a team. Smith also had six digs on defense.
Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.), the reigning RMAC offensive player of the week, stayed hot with nine kills and a .316 hitting percentage, while adding six blocks.
Summer Greager (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian H.S.) and
Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) each had seven kills.
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.), the reigning RMAC setter of the week, paced the offense with 36 assists.
Defensively,
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had 14 digs.
The Roadrunners led 18-12 in the first set and fought off a five-point run by the Orediggers to hold on.
In the second set, MSU Denver recovered from a 17-14 deficit with four straight points to rally for a 25-22 win.
Mines fought off match point at 24-23 to extend the match, but two late kills by Smith put the match away.
MSU Denver will play at Colorado Christian at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
