Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Chadron State on Friday night 69-53. MSU Denver moves to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC while Chadron State falls to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by senior
Tony Dobbinson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill H.S.) who had 16 points and went 4-for-4 on free throws. Senior
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) added 13 points to the score line and also made six free throws down the stretch. Sophomore Peter Moller added nine points and led the team in rebounds with seven. Billy Johnson led Chadron State with 14 points and five rebounds.
MSU Denver got off to a slow start in the game scoring only five points in the first four minutes. The Roadrunners would heat up and use a 7-0 and 8-0 scoring run to build a 19-9 lead with 6:50 to go in the half. MSU Denver would lead by as many as 15 in the first half and take a 32-20 lead into the locker room.
In the second half Chadron State would battle back and was close to within one at the 10:07 mark, 43-42. MSU Denver would respond with a 7-0 run and ultimately grow its lead back to 11 with 4:05 to play after a Dobbinson field goal. The Roadrunners would hold Chadron State to only two field goals in the final two minutes.
The Roadrunners will be back in action at home on Saturday, December 19 to face Regis University at 7:00 P.M. at the Auraria Event Center.
