DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver belted two home runs on Friday in an 11-1 win at Regis University to open a four-game series against the Rangers. MSU Denver improved to 10-12 overall and 5-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis fell to 10-15 and 5-10.
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, two runs scored and a double, and was helped by home runs by
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) and
Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) as the offense exploded for 14 hits.
Kris Lalk (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) pitched six innings and struck out eight, while allowing just one run.
Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park H.S.) earned his first career save with three shutout innings of relief.
The Roadrunners opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run single by
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.).
Nick McCasky (Golden, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) and Thurston also drove in runs with base hits.
Walker and Thurston hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to give MSU Denver a 6-1 lead.
Donaldson capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-run home run and Walker added a solo shot in the eighth in another two-run inning.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
