Men's basketball: Roadrunners upset by UCCS in RMAC championship

DENVER - No. 12/10 Metropolitan State University of Denver fell 82-65 to No. 21/20 University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday night in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament championship. The Roadrunners were seeking their third consecutive tournament championship, but dropped to 26-5 with the loss. UCCS improved to 26-5.

The loss snapped a 41-game home winning streak for MSU Denver, the second-longest streak in school history.

Mitch McCarron (Brisbane, Australia/Genesis Christian College) led the Roadrunners with 27 points, four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Eric Rayer (Colorado Springs/Coronado H.S.) knocked down 4-of-7 3-point field goals and scored 13 points. Nicholas Kay (Tamworth, Australia/Newington College) provided 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

For the game, the Mountain Lions shot 55 percent, including 11-of-19 from the outside.

UCCS shot 56 percent in the first half to lead 42-38 at the break. The Mountain Lions led by as many as 12 points, but two late 3-pointers by Rayer helped chip into the lead.

UCCS opened a 13-point lead early in the second half, but a 9-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Rayer quickly cut that Roadrunners deficit to 54-50 with 11:51 to go. But that was as close as the Roadrunners would get.

Derrick White scored 37 points and had 10 rebounds and five assists to lead UCCS, shooting 5-of-7 from the outside.
