DENVER - A leadoff double by
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) helped Metropolitan State University of Denver to a 5-4 win in 10 innings over Adams State on Friday night at The Regency Athletic Complex. The Roadrunners improved to 17-13 overall with their sixth consecutive win, and 12-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. ASU dropped to 14-18 and 10-11.
Â
After Baca's double in the 10th, the Grizzlies recorded a pair of strikeouts. With two outs,
Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) hit a ground ball to shortstop, but the throw bounced past the first baseman and allowed Baca to score from second to end the game.
Â
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second,
Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and Walker hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
Â
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) ripped a double to left field with one out in the fifth and
Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) scored from first base to put the Roadrunners in front, diving around the tag after the throw beat him to the plate. An error later in the inning allowed Levett to score for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Comito's infield single with two outs in the sixth put MSU Denver ahead 4-1.
Â
The Grizzlies finally got to starter
Kris Lalk (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) in the eighth, scoring three times on six hits and forcing the Roadrunners to the bullpen.
Â
Reliever
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) allowed a single to tie the game, but then got a double play and held the Grizzlies to just one baserunner over the next two innings. Baca earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Â
The two teams will meet for a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
