DENVER – The No. 19 ranked Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split a double-header versus Division I opponent Northern Colorado on Wednesday evening. The win was the first time MSU Denver has beaten a Division I opponent since 1989.
In game one, the Roadrunners defeated the visiting Bears by a final score of 9-6. MSU Denver trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the second inning when
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) hit a two-out single that drove in two runs. The Roadrunners would go on to add one run in the fourth on a Redmond RBI triple.
Kaylynn Harmon (Erie, Colo./Erie H.S.) led off the bottom of the fifth with an opposite-field homerun and MSU Denver added another run in the fifth before an hour and ten minute lightning delay.
Following the lightning delay, the Roadrunners scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Northern Colorado would add two runs in the top of the seventh. The Roadrunners shut the door with a game ending strike out followed by
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) throwing out a would-be base stealer to finish off the double-play. Redmond finished the game two-for-two with a triple, a walk and three runs batted in.
Susie Oury (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) set the single-season stolen base record for the Roadrunners. Oury, who already holds the record for career steals, finished the game two-for-two with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases.
The Roadrunners were defeated by a final score of 8-1 in game two of the double-header. The Roadrunners loan run came in the bottom of the first when Espinoza drove in Oury. Oury and
Amanda Taney (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) each finished two-for-three in the contest, and
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Espinoza each provided an additional hit for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners will travel to Chadron, Neb. for games against Chadron State and Colorado Mesa on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25.
