DENVER - No. 2/1 Colorado Mesa rallied from a two-run deficit to beat Metropolitan State University of Denver 7-4 on Friday night at The Regency Athletic Complex. The Roadrunners 22-18 overall and 17-12 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CMU improved to 38-5 and 30-3.
Trailing 3-0, MSU Denver scored three runs in the bottom of the third. After a double by
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) to lead off the inning, the Roadrunners used small ball to take the lead.
Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) and
Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) each had infield singles and
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) also walked in the inning.
Thurston doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on a single to left by Gibbons for a 4-2 Roadrunners lead.
But CMU scored three in the top of the sixth and added single runs in the seventh and eighth.
Gibbons finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate and Thurston, Walker and
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) each had two hits.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
