Baseball: Roadrunners win two at CCU in dramatic fashion

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Metropolitan State University of Denver swept a doubleheader at Colorado Christian on Friday, winning 4-3 and 3-2 in a pair of last-inning wins. The Roadrunners improved to 25-19 this season, while CCU fell to 13-35.

In Game 1, Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) tied the game in the top of the ninth stealing home as part of a double steal. Mitch Gibbons (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) drove in Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) with a single through the left side for the game-winning hit three pitches later.

Kris Lalk (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) allowed just two runs in seven innings, but Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) picked up the win in relief, surrendering one unearned run in two innings.

Gibbons led the team with three hits.

Thurston was again involved in the late rally in Game 2, delivering a game-winning single in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie. His two-out single to left scored Alex Walker (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.), who had previously walked and stolen second base.

MSU Denver's other two runs came in the first inning on an RBI ground out and an error. Thurston and Maloney had a team-high two hits each.

Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) allowed just one earned run in six innings and struck out four to pick up the win. Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park H.S.) struck out two in the seventh to earn his third save this season.

The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday.
