SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Freshman
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give No. 18 Metropolitan State University of Denver a 2-1 win over Regis University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The Roadrunners (43-14) will play the winner of St. Mary's (Texas) and Texas Woman's University at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday.
With two outs, Espinoza hit her second double of the game over the left fielder's head, allowing
Lani Redmond (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol H.S.) to score. Espinoza's doubles accounted for two of the team's four hits in the game as it was a pitching-dominated game.
Regis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after loading the bases with two outs when Emily John singled off starting pitcher
Kenzie Mattey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.)'s glove.
The teams endured a one hour and 55-minute lightning delay in the top of the fourth inning.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when
Mary Towner (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) ripped a single up the middle to score Redmond.
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk to keep the game tied until Espinoza's double in the seventh.
