DENVER - Metropolitan State University of Denver opened the 2015 with a 3-1 win over Laramie County Community College in an exhibition game on Wednesday evening at The Regency Athletic Complex at MSU Denver.
A slow start put MSU Denver in a 1-0 deficit in the 34th minute.
Jeff Gillis (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.) answered in the 35th minute, finishing a cross from the deep right corner by
Josh Belfrage (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) with one touch in the center of the box.
The Roadrunners took a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute on an own goal.
Ikaika Nichols (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) headed a corner kick towards the goal and an LCCC defender failed to clear the ball and headed the ball into the net.
Belfrage added a goal five minutes later, scoring from the top of the box after being set up by
Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) with a pass from the right midfield.
Jorge Vega (Denver, Colo./North H.S.) and
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) combined for four saves in goal. Tanner earned the win after playing the final 45 minutes.
MSU Denver will host its annual alumni game on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Roadrunners open the regular season on Sept. 4 at Dixie State.
