Rapid City, S.D. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team was defeated Saturday by S.D. Mines, 78-61. The Roadrunners drop to 7-12 overall and 5-8 in the RMAC. S.D. Mines improves to 9-8 overall and 6-7 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by sophomore
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) with 16 points. Junior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) added 13 points and sophomore
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) chipped in with 10 points. Ohrdorf led the team in rebounding with five rebounds.
MSU Denver jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. The Roadrunners held S.D. Mines to only two field goals in the first ten minutes. MSU Denver built a 12 point lead and led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Roadrunners build their largest lead of the game. MSU Denver took a 14 point lead early in the quarter following an Ohrdorf layup. S.D. Mines would go on a 10-1 run late in the quarter and following a three-point basket by freshman
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.), the Roadrunners would lead 37-31 at the half.
MSU Denver would give up the lead for the first time in the third quarter. S.D. Mines would begin to hit three-point baskets and would close the quarter on a 14-2 run. The Roadrunners would trail at the end of the third quarter 51-46.
The final quarter started with S.D. Mines outscoring the Roadrunners 23-4 over the first eight minutes. MSU Denver would be unable to respond in the time remaining. S.D. Mines finished the game shooting 68.8 percent from three-point range.
MSU Denver will return home to face New Mexico Highlands on Friday, January 29 at the Auraria Event Center. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
