Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's volleyball team (24-3, 18-0 RMAC) defeated CSU-Pueblo (13-15, 10-8 RMAC) 3-0 in the quarterfinal of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament.
The Roadrunners started off the first set strong scoring four straight points to get an early 4-0 lead. Despite a back and forth battle MSU Denver was able to maintain the lead and take the set 25-20. The Roadrunners posted a .438 hitting percentage to the Thunderwolves .194 on the set. Senior
Michaela Smith (Littleton, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) led the Roadrunners with nine kills two service aces in the set.
The second set went back and forth between the two sides. The Roadrunners took their first lead of the set off a block from Sophomore
Stephanie Laraway (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) to give her team an 8-7 lead. After the Thunderwolves fought to tie the match at 22 and 23 the Roadrunners were able to take the set 25-23 after a Laraway kill and a block from Smith and Laraway. MSU Denver held CSU-Pueblo to a .100 hitting percentage in the set.
The Roadrunners were able to take the third set 25-22 despite a close battle for the final three points. Smith ended the night with 16 kills and a team high 17 digs. Junior
Ryan Hoerdemann (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) added 8 kills and Laraway finished with 11 kills for the Roadrunners. Senior
Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) posted 40 assists in the match.
The Roadrunners will host #4 seeded Regis in the semifinal of the RMAC tournament Friday, November 18 at 7 p.m. The other semifinal match will be held at 5 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Auraria Event Center.
