Denver- The University of Denver women's basketball team (7-6, 3-3 RMAC) fell to Colorado Christian (4-7, 2-4 RMAC) 53-50 on Saturday night.
The start of the first half began slow for both sides as MSU Denver forced nine turnovers in the first quarter and Colorado Christian forcing eight Roadrunners turnovers. The score was just 6-4 in the Cougars favor six minutes into the first quarter. The first quarter ended in favor of the Cougars 12-11.
The score remained close for most of the second quarter until the Cougars had several 4-0 runs to gain their biggest lead of the game at 27-18 going into the half. The Roadrunners were led by junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) with seven points, two rebounds, and two steals in the first half. There was a total of 27 turnovers in the first half.
The Roadrunners came out on fire to start the second half, going on a 9-0 run to start the third quarter. A made three pointer by sophomore
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) gave the Roadrunners the lead at 30-29 with six minutes to go in the third quarter. The Cougars went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 34-30. CCU kept the momentum through the end of the third scoring a three-point buzzer beater to complete a 10-0 run to end the quarter 44-32.
MSU Denver fought a hard battle in the fourth quarter, cutting the Cougar lead to as little as four with just over a minute to go in the game. However, the Cougars were able to hold the Roadrunners to gain the 53-50 win.
Squires-Horton finished with 15 points. Junior
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) added 11 points and four rebounds for the Roadrunners. Junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) finished with seven points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
The Roadrunners will return to action at home on Friday, December 30 against Colorado Mesa at 5 p.m.
