Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated S.D. School of Mines on Friday night 85-69. The Roadrunners moved to 12-14 overall and 10-10 in the RMAC while S.D. Mines falls to 10-14 overall and 7-13 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners had five players score in double-figures. Sophomore
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) led all players in scoring with 20 points. Freshman
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) scored 13 while sophomores
Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) and
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) each added 11 points. Sophomore
Hannah Stipanovich (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton H.S.) also chipped in with 10 points.
MSU Denver trailed early falling behind 10-2 less than three minutes into the game. MSU Denver responded with a 9-0 run capped by a layup by
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) and a 10-0 run finished off on a Stipanovich jump shot. The Roadrunners led 24-17 after the first quarter.
The Roadrunners would slowly expand their lead in the second quarter, taking an 11 point lead on two separate occasions. MSU Denver held a 42-32 lead at the half.
S.D. Mines would chip away at the MSU Denver lead in the third quarter and cut the lead to 56-54 following a three-point basket with 1:47 to go in the period. The Roadrunners continued to cling to their lead at the end of the third quarter, 61-56.
The fourth quarter belonged to Ohrdorf. Ohrdorrf scored 11 points in the final period as the Roadrunners pulled away. MSU Denver allowed only four field goals in the fourth quarter.
MSU Denver will return to action on Saturday, February 20 to face Black Hills State. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
