Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Black Hills State 77-64 on Saturday. The Roadrunners advance to 18-9 overall and 16-5 in RMAC play while the Yellow Jackets fall to 12-13 overall and 10-11 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by senior
Tony Dobbinson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill H.S.) with 24 points. He was followed senior
DeShawn Phenix (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) with 14 points and junior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.) with 13 points. MSU Denver was led in rebounding by sophomore
Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) with eight.
MSU Denver out-shot the Yellow Jackets 50.0 percent to 44.2 percent from the field. MSU Denver also outrebounded Black Hills State 37-26 on the night.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead early in the first half until junior
Andre Harris (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb H.S.) hit back-to-backlayups to take a four point lead with 10:41 to go in the period. The Roadrunners had an 11-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Phenix. MSU Denver ended the first half with a lead of 36-26.
In the second half, the Roadrunners had another 11-0 run against the Yellow Jackets midway through the period. The Roadrunners and the Yellow Jackets went back-and-forth matching baskets in the second half keeping the Homecoming crowd on their toes. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to five on multiple occasions, but could not overtake the Roadrunners on senior night. MSU Denver ended the game out-scoring Black Hills State 9-4 over the last 2:17.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday, February 24 when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to close out the regular season against UCCS.
