Softball: Roadrunners Sweep Colorado Mines IN Saturday Doubleheader

MSU Denver improves to 5-1 in the RMAC with the wins

Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Colorado School of Mines in two games on Saturday.  The Roadrunners improve to 8-8 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC while Colorado Mines falls to 3-8 overall and 3-3 in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners took the first game 11-3 in five innings. In the first inning, junior Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) scored after junior Brook Lovas grounded out to centerfield making the score 1-0.  The majority of the scoring for the Roadrunners was done in the second inning.  Freshman Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) singled to left field, scoring sophomore Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.).  Following that, Bakovich singled to left field, which scored junior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).  Lovas batted in Kim and sophomore Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) with a base hit.  Bakovich scored after an illegal pitch and Lovas also scored on a fielder's choice.  MSU Denver would go on to score nine runs in the second inning giving the Roadrunners a 10-0 lead.  The Roadrunners went on to score one more in the fourth inning when sophomore Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) scored off of a double to left field by Terry. The Orediggers scored three runs of their own in the fifth inning, but came up short of avoiding mercy rule.  Junior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) picked up the win for the Roadrunners.

MSU Denver won its second game of the double header 7-4.  In the first inning, Bakovich scored after a single to right field by Lovas.  Sophomore Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) would bat in Fields and Lovas with a double.  Espinoza scored as well after a single by Smith.  The Orediggers would score three of their own in the second inning and another in the third inning to tie the game 4-4.  The Roadrunners responded by scoring Terry after a groundout to second base in the bottom of the third inning.  Terry had a huge fourth inning, hitting a two-run homerun to cement the MSU Denver victory 7-4.  Smith notched the win for the Roadrunners.

The Roadrunners will return to action on Sunday, February 28 when they are scheduled to take on the Orediggers in another doubleheader at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver.  First pitch is slated for noon.
