Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated New Mexico Highlands in a doubleheader on Saturday. Â The Roadrunners move to 11-9 overall and 8-2 in the RMAC.
In the first game MSU Denver defeated the Cowgirls 12-2. The first inning saw the Roadrunners score after sophomore
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) batted in junior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) on a single to third base to tie the game, 1-1. Â In the second inning, sophomore
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) scored off of a Lovas single to center field. Junior Hayley fields batted in junior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and sophomore
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge). Â Following that, sophomore
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) singled to left field, scoring both Fields and Lovas extending the Roadrunners lead to 6-1.
The Roadrunners had a strong fourth inning scoring five runs. Â Junior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) began the scoring after hitting a single up the middle to bringing Terry and Fields in. Â Anderson tripled into right-center and batted in Smith. Â Peters continued the Roadrunners scoring with a double to right-center scoring Anderson. Â Bakovich followed that with a single to left center and freshman pinch-runner
Caitie Booco (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central H.S.) scored. Â Lovas singled and batted in Bakovich to complete the scoring and cement the victory for the Roadrunners.
In the second game, the Roadrunners took nine innings to earn a 2-0 win.  The game remained scoreless all up until ninth inning when Peters hit a homerun over the left-center wall to score Terry. Smith pitched the complete-game shutout and allowed only three hits on the day striking out four batters.
MSU Denver will face New Mexico Highlands in a doubleheader on Sunday to close out the four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
