Softball: Roadrunners Finish Regular Season With Two Wins Saturday

MSU Denver secures No. 2 seed in RMAC Tournament

Spearfish, S.D. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team won two games on Saturday against Colorado Mesa and Black Hills State to improve to 31-17 overall and 25-9 in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners defeated Colorado Mesa 2-1 in the first game of the day.  MSU Denver struck first when sophomore Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) hit a double down the right field line to score junior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) in the top of the fourth inning.  Colorado Mesa responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.  The game would go to extra innings.  In the top of the eighth inning, Fields hit a triple to left field scoring sophomore Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).  Colorado Mesa failed to score in the bottom of the inning, giving the Roadrunners the victory.  Junior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) pitched an outstanding game allowing only one run on five hits to earn her tenth win of the season.

In the second game, MSU Denver defeated Black Hills State 9-0 in five innings.  The Roadrunners came out swinging scoring two runs in each of the first three innings.  Smith and sophomore Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) each drove in two runs during that span.  MSU Denver added another run in the fourth inning off of an Anderson single to make the score 7-0.  Freshman Caitie Booco (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central H.S.) and junior Liberty Nelson (Frederick, Colo./Frederick H.S.) each drove in a run in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 9-0.  Black Hills State was unable to score in the bottom of the inning and the game ended with the Roadrunners victory.  Senior Kailey Christensen (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork H.S.) picked up her fourth win of the season in the shutout victory allowing only five hits in the game.

MSU Denver will travel to Grand Junction, Colo. as the No. 2 seed in the RMAC Tournament on April 28-30.  Game times and opponents will be announced at a later date.
