Las Vegas, N.M.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team lost both games at New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, April 9. The Roadrunners fell 5-0 in game one and 3-1 in game two.
In game one, the two teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when Jesus Carporal singled down the right field line to put the Cowboys up 1-0. Highlands then reached on an error by senior second basemen
Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) in the bottom of the 6th and later capitalize with a single to bring him in making the score 2-0. The Cowboys added three more runs in the 7th off sophomore starter
Julian Garcia (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.), including a two-run triple from Joseph Cilladi to go up 5-0.
MSU Denver was held to only four hits by Cody Lawson who recorded nine strikeouts in the complete game shutout for New Mexico Highlands in their 5-0 victory. Garcia had a strong outing with 10 strikeouts while allowing one earned run, but three Roadrunner errors proved to be costly in the loss. Junior
Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) was the only Roadrunner to record multiple hits in the first game, going 2-3 at the plate.
In the second game the Roadrunners snapped their scoring drought in the 1st inning when sophomore
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) blasted a home run to right to go up 1-0. The Cowboys leveled the score 1-1 in the 4th with a Jeremy McCarty double off junior
Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.). McCarty then scored off an RBI single from Caporal, who advanced to third base off an error by junior
Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) in right field. Caporal later scored off another NMHU RBI single to go up 3-1.
MSU Denver threatened in the 5th inning with runners on first and second when Donaldson's hit to the right side glanced off Mau who was called for interference for the final out of the inning. The play would've otherwise been a single to right for Donaldson that likely scores junior
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) from second.
Highlands starter Alex Gutierrez struck out nine batters in the seven inning win. MSU Denver recorded nine hits but couldn't bring more than one home in the 3-1 game two loss. The Roadrunners are now 12-16 overall and 8-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
MSU Denver will play another doubleheader against Highlands at 12 noon on Sunday, April 10.
