Baseball: Seniors Go Out With a Win in Doubleheader at CCU

Julian Garcia sets the new MSU Denver record for strikeouts in a single season in final game of 2016

Lakewood, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team ended it's 2016 season with a split in their doubleheader matchup against Colorado Christian on Friday, May 6. The Roadrunners conclude their season with an overall record of 17-23 overall and 13-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

In game one, sophomore starter Julian Garcia (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) recorded 10 strikeouts and his 95th of the season, a new single season record for MSU Denver. The Cougars were up  2-0 until the fifth inning when Nick McCasky (Golden, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) connected for a long ball to right center to cut the lead to 2-1. CCU extended the lead to 6-1 in the seventh inning, before the Roadrunners struck back with a four run eighth inning highlighted by a two run single by senior Andrew Paust (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.). Colorado Christian added an additional two runs in the bottom half of the inning, to put the game out of reach. The Roadrunners tacked on two runs in the ninth but it was not enough as the Cougars took game one 8-7.

Things would be different in the final game of the series and the season for MSU Denver in game two. In their final game in a Roadrunner uniform, the seniors went out in style, combining for 11 of the 18 hits against CCU. Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) just missed hitting for the cycle by a single in his final game, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Second baseman Nick Comito (Lakewood, Colo./Mullen H.S.) also went 3-for-5 in his final game scoring two runs and Reilly Mau (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) finished his career with a strong performance going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. The underclassmen also got in on the action in game two, with catcher Marcus Bean (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) going 4-for-4 and scoring three runs, and junior starter Ryan Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) picking up the victory in the 12-3 final.
