Gunnison, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated Western State 60-55. The Roadrunners improved to 11-9 overall and 7-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers fell to 4-13 and 3-10 in conference.
MSU Denver was led by junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) who scored 21 points with 16 of those points coming in the second half. Ohrdorf added nine rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) and junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) both added 13 points. The Roadrunners shot 45 percent in the game while holding Western State to 35 percent.
The Mountaineers were quick to score the first five points of the game but Ohrdorf was quick to answer back converting a three-point play and finishing a lay up to even the score for the Roadrunners.
The score remained even at five for nearly five minutes until Western State's Katelynn Martinez scored from downtown leading each team to exchanging points for the remainder of the quarter and sending the game into the second quarter with the Mountaineers on top 13-12.
Western State went on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter to taking a seven point lead over the Roadrunners. The Mountaineers went on to outscore the Roadrunners 19-8 ending the half on top by 12 at 32-20.
At half Ohrdorf and Squires-Horton combined for half of the Roadrunners points, each scoring five.
MSU Denver started the second half with Ohrdorf and sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) sending their team on a 7-2 run to cut the Mountaineers lead to 7.
Senior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) buried a three and a jumper to cut the lead to four with 5:25 to go in the third quarter. The Roadrunners went on to go on a 9-0 run to end the third quarter out scoring the Mountaineers 21-6 in the quarter and taking the lead 41-38.
MSU Denver carried the energy into the fourth quarter scoring the first six points of the quarter to increase its lead to nine with 7:50 to go in the game.
The Roadrunners didn't let up and led by as many as 10, however, the Mountaineers didn't give up and went on a run in the final minutes of the game to bring the game within three. However, MSU Denver was able to hold on and earn the win 60-55.
The Roadrunners travel to UCCS on Tueaday, January 24 at 5:30 p.m.
