Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team fell in double overtime 83-76 to Westminster at home on Friday evening. The Roadrunners fell to 12-9 overall and 8-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Griffins improved to 11-6 overall and 11-4 in conference.
The Roadrunners were led in points by junior
Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium) with 22 and three assists. Junior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.) and Freshman
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School ) added 15 for the Roadrunners with Williams tying the game twice to send it into both overtimes. Senior
Andre Harris (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb H.S.) nearly completed a double double with 14 points and eight rebounds.
MSU Denver pushed the pace of the game early, bringing energy from the start and scoring the first four points of the game. MSU Denver didn't allow the Griffins to score a field goal for nearly five minutes into the first half.
The Roadrunners held the lead for 10 minutes of the first half, until the Griffins would go on a 12-0 to take the lead 18-10.
MSU Denver battled back to go on a 15-3 run and re-gain the lead 23-20 with 1:18 left to go in the first half. The Griffins were able to even the score at 23 sending the game into halftime tied. Møller led the Roadrunners with eight first half points shooting 60 percent from the field. The Roadrunners as a team shot 29 percent from the field in the first half while the Griffins shot 33 percent.
In the first five minutes of the half the Roadrunners and the Griffins tied the game 27-27. The Roadrunners broke the tie with two three pointers the first by senior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.) and the second by freshman
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School ). The energy was high in the Auraria Events Center as the Roadrunners and the Griffins battled it out.
With seven minutes to go in the half the Roadrunners led the Griffins 40-47, after two made Westminster three-pointers, the scored was a close 47-46. However, the Roadrunners answered back with a three-pointer and good jumper of their own to re-gain a six-point lead with 4:49 to go in the game.
With 2:39 to go the Griffins converted a three-point play to bring the score within one. Westminster would go on to take the lead 57-55 after two made free-throws with 1:26 remaining in the game.
Freshman
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School ) performed under high pressure converting two free throws with the Roadrunners down 57-59 with 5 seconds to go in the game to tie the game and send the game into overtime.
The Griffins were on the board first in overtime and took a 64-60 lead with 2:25 left in overtime.
With 21 seconds to go and with the Roadrunners trailing 66-64 sophomore Enrique Cortes Zotes drew an offensive foul to give the MSU Denver a chance to tie with 17 seconds remaining.
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School ) hit a jumper with eight seconds to tie the game and yet again send the game into double overtime.
The Griffins went on a 5-0 run to begin the second overtime.
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School ) answered scoring a jumper from downtown to bring the game back within two.
However, the Griffins were able to run away with the victory 83-76.
The Roadrunners will travel to South Dakota to take on Black Hills state on Friday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m.
