Volleyball: Roadrunners Extend Win Streak to Nine

MSU Denver wins 3-0

Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team (12-6, 9-1 RMAC) defeated CSU-Pueblo (3-15, 2-8 RMAC) on Saturday to complete its home weekend with a 2-0 record.

CSU-Pueblo got an early jump on the Roadrunners leading by as many as six points in the first.  MSU Denver fought back to tie the set up at 16 to regain some momentum.  The remainder of the set was a close battle between the two sides with the score staying within two points.  On set point for the Roadrunners, the Thunderwolves were able to bring the score back within one at 24-23, but senior Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) finished the set with a big kill for the 25-23 win. Fiatoa finished the set with a team high five kills.

The beginning of the second set appeared that it was going to be a repeat of the first, but the Roadrunners took control and would dominate.  After being all knotted up at eight points apiece, a kill from freshman Alexis Benda (Las Cruces, N.M./Orate H.S.) would send the Roadrunners on a 5-0 run to gain control.
The Roadrunners would take the second set 25-13 holding the Thunderwolves to a 0.029 hitting percentage.

MSU Denver carried the fire into the third set, taking an early lead over the Thunderwolves at 7-0.  The Roadrunners never let up, allowing the Thunderwolves to only come within six points and leading by as many as 11.  The Roadrunners finished on top 25-16 in the third set to take a second straight match in three sets.

Junior Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) finished the night with 11 kills and 11 digs.  Fiatoa added nine kills for the Roadrunners and posted a .500 attack percentage.  Senior Jackie Lopez (Encino, Calif./Notre Dame H.S.) posted a match high 16 digs.

MSU Denver will host Regis on Tuesday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
