Maryville, Mo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team (0-3) fell 69-58 to No. 1 Northwest Missouri State (3-0) on Friday, November 17.
The Bearcats came out of the gates strong scoring a two from downtown to go up on the Roadrunners 6-0. Senior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) answered back for the Roadrunners scoring a layup and one from behind the arch to cut the lead to 6-5.
The Bearcats went on to score the next five points, but junior
Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) went on a major run for the Roadrunners scoring seven points after two layups, a steal and a big bucket from downtown to bring the score within one at 13-12.
Senior
Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) score a put back layup to take the first lead of the game for the Roadrunners with 11:31 remaining in the half.
The scored was tied several times until senior
Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium) sunk a three to take a 22-19 lead for the Roadrunners. The Bearcats answered back tying the game back up at 22, but Møller hit another from downtown to steal the lead back for his team. Keita would go on to extend the MSU Denver lead to 27-22 with just under five minutes to go in the first half.
The Roadrunners continued to put the pressure on the Bearcats, and a three from senior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) would give MSU Denver its largest lead at 35-26.
MSU Denver would maintain through the rest of the half, holding a 39-31 lead over the Bearcats at halftime. The Roadrunners shot 50 percent from the field in the first half with the Bearcats shooting 42 percent. Cam Williams led all scorers with 15 first half points.
The Bearcats started the second half strong going on an 8-2 run to cut the Roadrunners lead to two at 43-41.
Northwest Missouri would continue its run to take the lead from the Roadrunners after a made three from Brett Dougherty put his team ahead 45-46. The Bearcats went on to extend its lead three after holding the Roadrunners scoreless four four minutes.
With just over nine minutes to go in the game a set of made free throws from junior Enrique Cortes Zotes would give the Roadrunners their lead back at 50-49. The Bearcats would follow it up by going on a 7-2 run to take a 57-51 lead.
The Bearcars held the Roadrunners to just seven more points to outscore the Roadrunners in the second half 38-19 and take the 69-58 win over MSU Denver.
Cam Williams finished the game with 21 points going 9-15 from the field. Keita finished with seven points and nine rebounds. Møller scored 10 points for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners will take on Upper Iowa tomorrow at 1 p.m.
