Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team (0-5) earned a 82-72 win over North Georgia University (2-3) on Saturday, November 25.
The first half was slow to get rolling with both sides making several stops on their defensive ends to keep the game scoreless for the first three minutes of the half.
Following a Nighthawk 3-2 lead, the Roadrunners would take the lead the following seven minutes with their largest lead being four.
North Georgia took the lead with 9:36 remaining in the half, however a shot from behind the arch from senior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) on the next play would take the lead right back for the Roadrunners.
North Georgia would answer back taking its largest lead of the half firing two back-to-back shots from downtown taking the 24-20 lead with 7:43 left on the clock.
There would be three tied scores and four lead changes in the remainder of the first half.
A layup from Cam Williams and a big defensive steal from junior
Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) for a breakaway layup in the last 30 seconds would put the Roadrunners up 38-37 at half.
Williams led both teams at half with 15 points. Both teams shot 33 percent from the three in the first half. MSU Denver shot 37 percent from the field with North Georgia shooting 41 percent.
The start of the second half continued the battle between the two sides. The first several minutes went back and forth until the Roadrunners took a six-point lead following a three-pointer from senior
Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium). MSU Denver would go on to make several defensive stops to extend its lead to 50-58.
The Nighthawks would bring the score back within four with 13:43 left on the clock, but Møller and Keita added five points to finish a 9-2 run for the Roadrunners, taking a 52-61 lead.
The Roadrunners continued to play hard on both ends of the court continuing to make big defensive plays and extending their lead to as many as 11.
MSU Denver earned its first win of the season 82-72 over North Georgia. Three ended in double digits for the Roadrunners. Williams finished with 29 points and six rebounds. Møller finished the night with 18 points. Taylor added 15 points for the Roadrunners and six rebounds.
The Roadrunners will kick of 2017-18 RMAC play next weekend as they travel to South Dakota to take on Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines.
