Men’s Soccer: MSU Denver Falls in RMAC Tournament Semifinal to No. 9 Mines

Roadrunners fall 3-1 to Colorado School of Mines

Golden, Colo.- The Metropolitan School of Denver (8-11-1, 8-6-0 RMAC) fell 3-1 to No. 9 Colorado School of Mines (16-3-0) in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament semifinal.
                           
The energy was high to begin the game for the semifinal with each team earning promising chances early on.  The Roadrunners had a great chance just three minutes into the half when freshman Nils Runnberg (Barsebäck, Sweden/Jensen Education) took a shot that just missed the frame of the goal.
 
Goal keeper James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) made sever big time saves for the Roadrunners to keep the score locked up at 0-0.
 
The game continued to be a battle between the two teams, until the Orediggers were the first to make it on the board in the 34th minutes.  Colorado School of Mines player, John Haist scored his 20th goal of the season off a deflection from a Oredigger corner kick.
 
The Roadrunners did not let up throughout the rest of the half but were unable to get the equalizer sending the game into half with the Orediggers on top 1-0.
 
The second half started off with the Roadrunners searching for the equalizer.  Freshman Moritz Walther (Heidelberg, Germany /Otteinrich- Gymnasium) forced the Oredigger goal keeper to make a big time save to keep Mines on top.
 
Mines continued to fight the Roadrunners off and were able to capitalize on a chance that came in the 76th minute when Haist was able to get behind the Roadrunners defense and took a shot from the endline to barely make it past Tanner.
 
Just four minutes later the Orediggers scored one more to just about seal the deal, taking a 3-0 lead over MSU Denver.
 
The Roadrunners fight never deceased fight to the last seconds of the game.  Sophomore Danny Bautista (Denver, Colo./North H.S.) took a free kick from the right end line with 18 seconds left for junior Hector Banegas (Tucson, Ariz./Rincon H.S.) to find the back of the net, ending the game 3-1.
 
The Roadrunners finished the season 8-11-1 overall and 8-6 in the RMAC.
