Women’s Basketball: MSU Denver Falls to Black Hills

Roadrunners fall 72-57

Spearfish, S.D.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team fell 72-57 to Black Hills State University to wrap up its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road trip.
 
The first quarter was slow to get started, with both sides scoring just four points in the first five minutes.  Following a 7-4 Yellow Jackets lead, the Roadrunners nearly went on a 8-0 run and nearly held the Yellow Jackets scoreless through the rest of the quarter. 
 
MSU Denver held a 12-9 lead heading in the second quarter, but the Yellow Jackets started the second quarter strong, going on a 9-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. A three from junior Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) would give the Roadrunners a spark to go on a 7-2 run to take back the lead at 19-18 for the Roadrunners with just over five minutes left on the first half clock.
 
The Yellow Jackets continued to shoot well the following minutes, with Julia Seamans hitting her third three for her team, taking a four-point lead over the Roadrunners.
 
The Roadrunners were able to tie the score up at 25 with 2:10 left in the half, but the Yellow Jackets finished strong going on a 9-0 run to end the half on top 34-25.
 
Ohrdorf finished the first half with six board and six points. Senior Mikala Gordon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo H.S.) also had six first half points for the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners shot 36 percent from the field in the first half while the Yellow Jackets shot 44 percent.
 
The Yellow Jackets maintained their lead through the third quarter with the Roadrunners bringing the score within five at one point. However, the Yellow Jackets continued to push through the end of the quarter taking a 51-41 lead heading into the last quarter. 
 
The Yellow Jackets went on to score the first seven points of the fourth quarter and the Roadrunners were unable to make the comeback with Black Hills State taking the 72-57 win. 
 
Gordon led the Roadrunners with 15 points shooting 6-9 from the field and 1-2 from the three, she also grabbed seven boards for the Roadrunners.  Junior Emily Hartegan (Wylie, Texas/Wylie East H.S.) added 12 points for the Roadrunners going 4-6 from the field
 
MSU Denver will return home to host Regis on Friday, December 8 at 5 p.m.
