Softball: MSU Denver Falls in Day Two at Easton Classic

Roadrunners fall to Hawaii-Hilo and Cal-Baptist

St.George, Utah- The Metropolitan State University of Denver's softball team competed in day two of the Dixie State Easton Classic in which the team fell 3-0 to University of Hawaii Hilo 3-0 and California Baptist 8-3. The Roadrunners fell to 4-4 overall.

Senior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) started at pitcher for the Roadrunners in game one against University of Hawaiii-Hilo.

The Vulcans scored first in the game scoring a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to get the game going.  That was the only hit of the inning for the Vulcans.

The Roadrunners were held hitless through the second, third, and fourth inning. MSU Denver held the score at 1-0, after holding strong defense in the bottom of the fourth with the Vulcans getting two hits.  The Roadrunners were able to hold the inning scoreless with the Vulcans leaving three on base.

Freshman Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) went in on the mound for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out and two on base. The Vulcans were able to score two more runs in the inning that would be the last for either to score in the game, with Hawaii-Hilo winning 3-0.

In game two of the day against California Baptist, the Roadrunners were first to score after a junior Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) singled through left field to send junior Haley Fields home and put the Roadrunners up 1-0.

Fields took the mound in the bottom of the first for MSU Denver. Cal-Baptist answered quickly scoring the tying run on a Roadrunners fielding error.

After a scoreless second inning for both sides, the Lancers had the edge through the third inning scoring two off a single to third base and a three run homer to put Cal-Baptist up 4-0.

Junior Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) gave a spark to the Roadrunners in the fourth inning scoring a solo home run. However, the Lancers would go on to score three more runs after another two run home run making the score 8-2 in favor of Cal-Baptist.

MSU Denver would put one more run on the board in the seventh when Fields singles to left center sending senior Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) home. But that would not be enough and the Lancers would take the game 8-3.

The Roadrunners will return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against California State San Bernardino.
