Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team fell to Regis University on Saturday February 11. The Roadrunners fall to 15-10 overall and 11-8 in the RMAC. The Rangers advance to 17-7 overall and 11-7 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners had five players in double figures led by junior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/South H.S.) with 20 points. Freshman
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School ) added 19 for the Roadrunners. Junior
Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium) and senior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.) added 12 and junior
Enrique Cortés Zotes (Malaga, Spain/I.E.S. Litoral) ened with 11. Junior
Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) finished with a career high 16 rebounds.
The first several minutes of the half was scoreless for both sides with the Rangers making it on the board first sinking a three. Each team would exchange points with the Rangers taking a four-point lead just over four minutes into the half.
The Roadrunners answered back bringing the game within two at 11-9, with junior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/South H.S.) having seven of the first nine points for his team. The Rangers caught fire halfway through the half with 14-2 run over a span of three minutes to take a 12 point led.
Cortés Zotes ended the Roadrunners dry spell with a jumper with 5:30 left in the half.
With the Rangers leading by nine, two back to back threes from Cortés Zotes and Howard along with a jumper from Alec Williams would bring the Roadrunners within one at 28-26. But the Rangers continued to answer scoring two from downtown as well, sending the game into halftime with a score of 34-29 in favor of the Rangers.
Alec Williams led the Roadrunners at half with eight points with Cortés Zotes and
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/South H.S.) adding seven first half points for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver shot 31 percent from the field in the first half while Regis shot 36 percent.
Both team brought energy to the Auraria event center to start the second half with the Roadrunners catching fire two and a half minutes in going on a 16-2 run over five minutes and taking a 47-49.
The push continued for the Roadrunners continuing to put the offensive pressure on the Rangers leading by as many as 14.
The Rangers pushed a comeback going on a 10-1 run to cut the Roadrunners lead to four at 69-65 with 4:56 remaining in the game. Regis would go on to take the lead 75-74 with three minutes to go after scoring one from downtown.
With the game tied at 80 with 10 seconds to go Dexter Sienko scored a tip-in to beat the buzzer and gain the win 82-80.
The Roadrunners will return home Saturday, February 18 against UCCS at 7 p.m.
