Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Regis 80-73 in the Quarterfinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The Roadrunners improved to 17-12 overall. The Rangers fell to 20-10 overall.
MSU Denver was led by senior
Brian Howard (Maywood, Ill./Saint Ignatius H.S.), finishing with 26 points. Junior
Sunday Dech (Perth, Australia/Churchlands H.S.) added 13 points in the game with six rebounds. Junior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/South H.S.) scored 12 for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver shot 53 percent from the field in the game.
Regis started off the game hot, scoring the first seven points of the half. Howard scored the connected one from downtown to get the Roadrunners on the board two minutes in, cutting the Rangers lead to 7-4.
The next nine points all were from downtown, with Regis scoring two from beyond the arch and junior
Sunday Dech (Perth, Australia/Churchlands H.S.) adding three for the Roadrunners making the score 13-6 four minutes into the first half.
The Roadrunners continued to fight going on a 14-5 run with Howard getting hot from downtown connecting on two from beyond the arch and a jumper to take the lead 26-24 with 8:24 remaining in the half.
MSU Denver was able to keep the lead for the remainder of the half with each side exchanging buckets to end the half 37-35 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Howard led all scorers with 17 first half points going 50 percent from the field and from the three. MSU Denver shot 51 percent from the field while holding the Rangers to 41 percent.
Dech scored his second three of the game to lead off the second half and extend the Roadrunners lead to five.
The Rangers were able to tie the game up at 47 with 13:37 to go after a 7-2 run, however Regis was unable to gain the lead following the tie with the Roadrunners fight to gain back the lead.
Two back to back threes from Howard and Sophomore Enrique Cortes-Zotes would get the energy high for the Roadrunners, putting the team up six with just over five minutes remaining. However, the Rangers continued to fight scoring the next four to cut the lead to 71-69.
The remaining four minutes proved to be exciting as the Roadrunner fought to keep their lead. The Rangers would tie the game four times in the half, but was never able to
With a three-point lead with 27 seconds remaining, junior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/South H.S.) sunk two free throws for MSU Denver to go up 78-73.
The Roadrunners got a stop on the next possession and Cortes-Zotes was sent to the line and able to convert two more free throws to seal the deal at 80-73.
