Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Nebraska-Kearney and fell to Colorado Mesa on Sunday at The Regency Athletic Complex.
In the first game, MSU Denver struck early putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. After
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) scored on a single by
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.), Lovas would score as
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) stole second base. After
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) reached on a walk,
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) knocked in two runs with a double.Â
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) would drive in the final run of the inning making the score 5-0 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Nebraska-Kearney put one run on the board in the top of the second inning, but MSU Denver would respond with seven runs in the bottom of the inning.Â
Tes Hass (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) each drove in two runs in the inning. The Roadrunners lead 12-1 after the second inning and that would hold up as the final score. Smith allowed only four hits in the contest.
In the second game of the day for the Roadrunners, MSU Denver fell 9-4 to Colorado Mesa. Colorado Mesa took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. MSU Denver responded and retook the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Smith, Lovas and Anderson all scored while Anderson, Terry and Peters all tallied an RBI.
MSU Denver tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Bakovich drove in Smith to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Despite being able to put on additional baserunners, MSU Denver would not score for the remainder of the game. Colorado Mesa scored six runs top of the fifth inning and another one in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 9-4.Â
MSU Denver will travel to compete in a tournament at Dixie State on February 9-11.
