Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team wrapped up its series with an 11-1 win against Adams State on Sunday, March 26. The Roadrunners improved to 13-13 overall and 9-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Grizzlies fell to 9-17 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
Sophomore
Hunter Hogoboom (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) made the start on the mound for the Roadrunners in game four against the Grizzlies. Adams State put one run up in the first inning to go up 1-0. However, the Roadrunners held the Grizzlies to one run and one hit in the first with two Grizzly players left on base.
The following four innings proved to be a pitcher's dual with the Roadrunners scoring a run to tie the game up in the fourth inning. Junior
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) hit a sac fly to center field to score junior
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) to send the game into the top of the fifth knotted up at one.
The Roadrunners held the Grizzlies at one through the top of the fifth inning and exploded offensively in the bottom of the inning scoring six runs to steal the lead. Freshman
Dylan Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./D'Evelyn Jr/Sr High School) led off the inning for the Roadrunners to reach base one a single through the left side and would go on to advance to second base on a wild pitch. Senior
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) reached base on a single followed by senior
Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) hitting one to center field to score Nelson for the first run of the inning. Junior
Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) was walked to load the bases for MSU Denver. Junior
Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) was also walked, scoring Thurston. Maloney added two more RBI's on the day hitting a single to right field, sending O'Donnell and Ekman. Bean wrapped up the scoring in the fifth inning, hitting a single to score Maloney and Kennedy. MSU Denver brought the game into the sixth inning up 7-1.
The Roadrunners held the Grizzlies scoreless in the seventh with Hogoboom retiring 18 of the last 21 batters faced since the first inning.
MSU Denver put four more runs up in the seventh off five hits. Kennedy and Maloney led off the inning for the Roadrunners, both reaching base on a single through the right side. Nelson scored Kennedy, followed by junior Donny Ortiz Jr. singling to right field to score Maloney for the ninth run of the game. Thurston topped off the inning for the Roadrunners hitting a 2 RBI double to score Nelson and Ortiz.
That would end up being the final runs of the game with the Roadrunners earning the 11-1 win over the Grizzlies.
MSU Denver will be on the road at Regis next Friday, March 31 at 3 p.m.
