Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team swept the UCCS Mountain Lions in a double header on Sunday March 5. The Roadrunners advanced to 14-7 overall and 8-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions fell to 2-11 overall and 1-7 in the RMAC. MSU Denver won the first game 1-0 and the second 4-1.
The first game of the day proved to be a pitcher's dual, as there was only one run scored throughout the entire game. Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) earned the win, with 55 careers wins she ties the all time program record held by Christie Robinson.
The Roadrunners scored the lone run in the game when the bases were loaded in the bottom of the fourth. Junior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) was hit by a pitch to score junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).
The rest of the game was scoreless as freshman Darby Mcghee entered the game at pitcher to start the fifth inning. McGhee was able to hold the Mountain Lions through the last two innings. With two runners on base and two outs for UCCS the freshman struck out the batter for the final out of the game.
The Roadrunners ended the game with three hits to the Mountain Lions seven, earning their seventh conference win 1-0.
In the second game of the day, junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) started at the mound for the Roadrunners.
Both sides were held to scoreless first and second innings with one hit for each side through the first two.
The Mountain Lions made it on the board in the top of the third off a double from Martinek to send a runner home and to put the Mountain Lions up 1-0.
The Roadrunners wouldn't answer back till the bottom of the sixth with an exciting comeback, starting with senior Colissa Backovich reaching base off a single.
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) then grounded out to center bringing Backovich to third. Senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) followed hitting a triple, bringing Backovich home and tying the game. Junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) sac field out to right field to bring Lovas home bringing the game to 2-1. Anderson singled. Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) advanced to first and then on a throwing error the short stop advanced to second as Anderson came home. The Roadrunners led 3-1 as Terry doubled to right field bringing Smith home. Freshman Darby McGee out and was tagged at first bringing the inning to a close. The Roadrunners led the Mountain Lions 4-1 to end the sixth inning.
The Roadrunners travel to Aztec, New Mexico where they will face Fort Lewis on Saturday March 11 at 12 p.m.
