Roadrunners win 6-3 to take series 3-1

Colo. Springs-  The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team wrapped up its series against UCCS on Sunday, April 23. The Roadrunners earned the  win against UCCS 6-3. The Roadrunners improved to 21-20 overall and 15-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions fell to 22-22 overall and 17-15 in conference play.

Freshman Jerome Bohannon II (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail High School) started on the pitcher's mound for the Roadrunners.

UCCS had the edge to start the game scoring a run in the bottom of the first and second inning, going up 2-0 off a combined five hits.

The following two innings were scoreless for both sides with each team posting two hits.

The Roadrunners came up big in the fifth inning to tie the game at two. Senior Nick McCasky (Golden, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) led off the inning hitting a single to right field to reach base. Junior Donny Ortiz Jr. earned the net hit for the Roadrunners to advance McCasky to third base. Senior Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) was then walked to load the bases for the Roadrunners. Senior Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) then hit a sacrifice fly to score McCasky and cut the Mountain Lions lead to 2-1. Junior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) hit a single through the left side to send Ortiz home for the tying run.

The score remained tied at two until the top of the ninth inning when MSU Denver stole the lead. Stimpson reached base on a walk, with junior Aaron Germani (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) entering the game to pinch run for Stimpson. Ortiz was then able to reach base on a Mountain Lion error. Thurston then hit a double down the right line to score Germani for the go ahead run. Junior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) sealed the inning the Roadrunners hitting a three run homer, putting the Roadrunners up 6-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Mountain Lions were able to put one run up in the bottom of the ninth, but that wouldn't be enough as the Roadrunners were able to earn the 6-3 lead in the final game of the series.
