Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team defeated UCCS 4-2 on Saturday, April 8. The Roadrunners are now 15-17 overall and 11-11 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions fell to 17-16 and 12-10 in conference.
Junior
Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park H.S.) started on the mound for the Roadrunners to pitch the complete game for MSU Denver. The Mountain Lions were held to four hits and two runs in the first two innings. Vega would go on to retire the next 22 batters through to the eighth inning, with the Mountain Lions just earning one last hit.
The Roadrunners would score single runs in the first, third, fifth, and eighth inning to earn the 4-2 RMAC win over the Mountain Lions.
In the first inning senior
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) reached base on a walk. Thurston was then able to steal second base and advanced to third on a Mountain Lion error. Junior
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) was then able to send Thurston home to put the Roadrunners first run of the game on the board.
In the third inning the Roadrunners scored the tying run off another Maloney RBI to score Thurston.
The go ahead run came in the bottom of the fifth inning with Senior
Derek Stimpson (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) leading off the inning hitting a single to third base. Senior
Jake Ekman (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) would then score Stimpson for MSU Denver to go up 3-2.
The final run of the game for the Roadrunners came in the bottom of the eighth with Stimpson earning a single RBI off a long double to score junior
Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) and to seal the 4-2 win for MSU Denver.
The Roadrunners will play in a double header tomorrow with game one against UCCS and game two against Regis. The first game will begin at 12 noon at the Regency Athletic Complex. The second game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
