Chadron, Neb.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver's softball team splits their double header against Chadron State on Sunday April 9. MSU Denver lost the first game 4-3 and won the second 10-0. The Roadrunners are now 30-13 overall and 22-6- in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Eagles are now 20-18 and 17-10 in the RMAC.
In the first game the Roadrunners got off to a strong start. With senior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.), senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) on base sophomore
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) flied out to left field as Anderson advanced to second and Fields scored on the throw. Anderson than stole third based and scored on an error. MSU Denver finished the top if the first 2-0 over the Eagles.
The Eagles answered back in the bottom of the second when they hit two back to back home runs. With the score tied and Taylor Bauer on third, Courtney Lecher singled up the middle while the Bauer scored on the throw. The Eagles ended the inning with a 3-2 lead over the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners were not going to take it. With Fields, Bakovich, and Anderson on base, Espinoza flied out to centerfield as Fields scored. MSU Denver ended the inning tied with Charon State 3-3.
MSU Denver and Chadron State held each other to eight innings but the Eagles clinched the win when Allie Mason hit a homerun to left field. The score was 4-3 for the Eagles win.
The second game started off slow for both teams. In the top of the fourth inning Fields hit a double to second base. Then Bakovich singled to centerfield and advanced to second on the throw while fields scored. MSU Denver left the fourth inning with a lead of 1-0.
The Roadrunners continued their momentum in the fifth inning. With senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.), freshman
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) on base, and sophomore
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) on base Fields singled to bring, Kim to second base, and Sansburn and Lovas home to score. Bakovich singled to left center bringing Fields to third base as Kim scored. Anderson then flied out to left field as Fields scored. Espinoza was hit by a pitch followed by Freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) singling up the middle to advance Espinoza to second as Bakovich scored. Freshman
Harley Huser (Thornton, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) came in to pinch run for Espinoza. Senior
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) doubled to centerfield advancing McGhee to third and bringing Huser in to score. The Roadrunners ended to fifth inning leading the Eagles 7-0.
MSU Denver could not be stopped entering the sixth inning. Kim singled to left field and then stole second base. Kim advanced to third on a pass ball and then scored on a pass ball. With Bakovich on third base, Anderson on second, and Espinoza on first, McGhee singled up the middle advancing Espinoza to second while Bakovich and Anderson scored. The Roadrunners ended to top sixth inning having extended its lead over the Eagles.
The Roadrunners ended the game against the Eagles with a score of 10-0.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday April 14 when they return to the Regency Athletic Conference to face Black Hills state at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
