Men's Soccer: Roadrunners Fall In Final Minutes to Seattle Pacific

MSU Denver returns home to take on Western Washington Saturday

Denver, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's Soccer team fell in the final minutes 2-1 to Seattle Pacific in its 2017 home opener at the Regency Athletic Complex on Thursday, September 7. The Roadrunners fall to 0-3 while the Falcons improve to 2-1.

Seattle Pacific came out strong getting a chance off a cross just minutes into the game, but junior goalkeeper James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) came up with a huge save for the Roadrunners sending the ball over the goal for a corner kick.

The Falcons did not let up on the Roadrunners defense, scoring 15 minutes into the half. A through ball was sent to forward Mori Tsuchiya who took a low shot to the left corner finding the back of the net.

MSU Denver fought back, getting a great chance in the 25th minute when junior Nils Runnberg (Barsebäck, Sweden/Jensen Education) dribbled to past a Falcon defender to take a rocket of a shot, but the Seattle Pacific goal keeper made a great save to deflect the shot.

The Falcons held control of the game going into the second half with a lead of 1-0. The first half shots were even at five a piece with the Falcons putting three on goal to the Roadrunners two.

MSU Denver went into the second half hungry for the equalizer with it coming in the 51st minutes.  Junior Moritz Walther (Heidelberg, Germany /Otteinrich- Gymnasium) scored his second goal of the season off a free kick on the left side of the 18-yard box.  The shot hit of the wall and deflected into the right side of the goal, tying the game up at 1.

The second half proved to be a battle between the two sides with each side keeping the ball for even possession.

The Falcons were awarded a penalty kick of a Roadrunners foul in the box with 11:20 remaining in the game, but once again Tanner came up huge for MSU Denver blocking the shot and keeping his team in the game.

Despite a continued battle, Seattle Pacific was able to score the difference maker with two minutes to go in the game.

MSU Denver will return home to take on Western Washington on Saturday, September 9 at the Regency Athletic Complex at 6 p.m.
