Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team earned a 68-39 win over New Mexico Highlands to sweep its home games over the weekend. The Roadrunners improved to 12-5 overall and 8-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Cowgirls fell to 4-12 overall and 2-9 in the conference.
The first quarter started off close between the two teams, with New Mexico Highlands holding a lead over the Roadrunners through the first two minutes of the quarter. A three from junior
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) would help gain some momentum for the Roadrunners, starting a 14-2 run through the rest of the quarter. The Roadrunners led the Cowgirls 20-10 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter proved to be just about even between the two sides with New Mexico Highlands out scoring MSU Denver by a small margin of 17-16. The Roadrunners were still able to pull out on top heading into the second half with a score of 36-27.
The Roadrunners were led by senior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) who had 13 points in the first half, shooting 6-9 from the field. MSU Denver shot 48 percent from the field going 15-31. New Mexico Highlands shot 40 percent going 8-20.
The Roadrunners exploded in the third quarter holding the Cowgirls to just four points with just one field goal while scoring 19. MSU Denver held a 22-point lead going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter proved to be much like the third with the Roadrunners outscoring the Cowgirls 13-8 to take the 68-39 win.
The Roadrunners were by Ohrdorf who finished the night with 27 points going 12-16 from the field while grabbing eight boards. Senior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) ended the night with 18 points. The Roadrunners shot a season high 52 percent while holding the Cowgirls to 23 percent.
MSU Denver will return home to take on Colorado Mesa on Friday, January 19 at 5 p.m.
