Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated Western State 69-61 on Saturday, January 20. The Roadrunners improved to 13-6 overall and 9-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountaineers fell to 6-13 overall and 3-10 in conference.
The first quarter stayed close between the two sides. The Mountaineers held a small early lead, but the Roadrunners came back to take an 8-5 lead after senior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) scored six straight points for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners led for the remainder of the quarter heading into the second on top 21-18.
Both teams shot well in the first with MSU Denver shooting 53 percent from the field and Western shooting 57. Ohrdorf had 10 of the Roadrunners 21 points entering into the second quarter.
MSU Denver held its lead through the second, leading by as many as eight. However, Western made an attempt at a comeback coming within three of the Roadrunners. The halftime score was 36-32 in favor of the Roadrunners.
Ohrdorf led the Roadrunners with 18 of the teams 36 points, shooting 7-9 from the field. MSU Denver shot 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown in the first half while the Mountaineers shot 41 percent from the field and 22 percent from the three.
Both teams scored on its first possession to start the second with junior
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) hitting one from behind the arch to give the Roadrunners a five-point lead.
The Mountaineers brought the score back within on shortly after and would stay in it in the minutes to follow.
A made three from Senior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) started a 9-2 run for the Roadrunners to gain a eight-point lead. Freshman
Losalini Katia (Wyoming, Australia/Pennant Hills High School) scored four of the nine for her team.
Senior
Mikala Gordon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo H.S.) came up big for the Roadrunners getting a steal and finishing the breakaway layup to extend the Roadrunners lead to 11 with just over two minutes to go in the third. MSU Denver headed into the final quarter with a 55-46 lead over Western State.
The Roadrunners didn't let down in the fourth taking a 16-point lead with four minutes left on the game clock. The Mountaineers would bring it within six with three second remaining, but that that wouldn't be enough and the Roadrunner would run away with the 69-61 win.
Ohrdorf led the Roadrunners with 23 points and seven rebounds. The team shot 48 percent in the game and held the Mountaineers to 32 percent.
The Roadrunners will host UCCS on Tuesday, January 23 at 5 p.m.
