Women’s Basketball: MSU Denver Defeats Adams State 83-67

Roadrunners earn road win

Alamosa, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team earned a 83-67 win over Adams State on Saturday, January 6.  The Roadrunners improved to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Grizzlies fell to 3-9 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
 
The Roadrunners started the first quarter on top taking an early 7-1 lead over the Grizzlies. The next four minutes of the quarter the two sides exchanged a pair of 7-0 runs with the Grizzlies stealing the lead. However, the Roadrunners answered right back, taking a 14-8 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter.
 
The Roadrunners were able to maintain a lead through the rest of the first quarter, holding a ten-point lead going into the second quarter.
 
Adams State outscored the Roadrunners 15-10 in the second quarter, but the Roadrunners were still able to head into halftime on top of the Grizzlies 34-29.
 
Senior J'Nae Squires Horton and Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) led the Roadrunners at half with seven points. MSU Denver shot 40 percent from the field in the first half while Adams State shot 43 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arch. The Roadrunners out-rebounded the Grizzlies 20-13 in the first half.
 
The Grizzlies started the second half strong stealing the lead from the Roadrunners three minutes into the third quarter after a 7-0 run.
 
The Roadrunners fought to take the lead back.  Despite a small lead, there was only one lead change through the rest of the quarter. The Roadrunners regained a lead and outscored the Grizzlies 11-5 in the final minutes of the quarter.  Junior Jonnalyn Wittwer gave a spark to her team, knocking down a three in the final 11 seconds of the quarter to end the quarter 55-50 in favor of the Roadrunners.
 
Squires-Horton carried over the third quarter momentum scoring one from downtown on the opening play of the fourth quarter. Despite an effort from the Grizzlies for a comeback, the Roadrunners broke away after an 8-0 run to take an 11-point lead at 71-60 with five minutes left on the game clock.
 
The Roadrunners outscored the Grizzlies 12-7 to finish the game.  MSU Denver took the 83-67 win over Adams State.
 
Squires-Horton and Ohrdorf both finished the night with 17 points for the Roadrunners. Senior Mikala Gordon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo H.S.) nearly completed a double double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Junior Erica Correa (Davie, Florida/The Sagemont School) ended with a season high 13 points.
 
MSU Denver will return home to host CSU-Pueblo on Friday, January 12 at 5 p.m.
