DENVER – Sometimes, great players will their team to victory. Other times, great players are just in the right place at the right time.
The former was the story in Metropolitan State University of Denver's overtime win at Fort Lewis last Sunday. The latter proved true on Friday afternoon as
Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) found herself in the right spot to net a game-winner in overtime for the second consecutive contest, leading MSU Denver (9-3-1, 7-2-0 and third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a win over Colorado Christian (5-6-2, 4-5-0 RMAC).
Freshman midfielder
Paloma Teran (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) crossed the ball from the left side of the pitch into the box, where fellow freshman
Elisa Dean (Littleton, Colo./Front Range Christian) found it and fired a rocket off the hands of CCU goalkeeper Ireland Van Dyke. None other than Banks was waiting for the leftovers, depositing an easy game-winner for her 12
th goal of the season.
"It was a great ball by Paloma (Teran) and we created havoc in front of the goal for a Reigna (Banks) finish," MSU Denver head coach
Tracy Chao said following the win. "We were back in familiar territory with back-to-back overtime matches. I don't think we made the game easy for ourselves, and CCU did well in their pressure.
A gritty battle ensued from the opening whistle, as both teams exchanged attacks with neither finding the net through 90 minutes of play. Finally, Banks' fourth shot of the game found the net in the 103
rd minute.
"Ultimately, we found the back of the net and I am proud that we continued to stay focused and finished the match," Chao said.
MSU Denver totaled 19 shots and seven on frame, while CCU had 12 shots and four on goal. The Roadrunners had the majority of the chances in the first half, firing 11 shots to the Cougars' six. However, action was more even in the second half as both teams took five shots and two on goal.
While Banks played heroine, MSU Denver's ninth overall win and seventh conference victory was a total team effort.
"There were lots of contributions from different players and again great energy and positivity from the entire team," Chao said. "That continues to be a major piece of our puzzle, being together and staying together until the last second."
There was freshman defender
Taylor Reising (Redmond, Wash./Rock Canyon), who started the match and put two shots on goal. There was Teran, who came off the bench to play 63 minutes, tallying two shots and an assist. There was the always dependable junior netminder
Erica Torres (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield), who earned her seventh shutout win of the season while notching four saves. There was junior midfielder
Nayeli Baez (Fillmore, Calif./Fillmore), who provided instant offense off the bench with four shots in 38 minutes. There were senior defender
Emily Romer (Chandler, Ariz./Perry) and junior midfielder
Brooklynn Mooney (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield), who each grinded out all 103 minutes of the match. There were plenty more performances that didn't show up in the stat sheet.
At the end of the day, it all added up to a hard-fought, 1-0 overtime victory to put three points on the board for the Roadrunners, who are currently third in the RMAC standings behind No. 4 Colorado School of Mines and No. 16 UCCS. Mines, who will battle MSU Denver at 12 p.m. MT Sunday at the Regency Athletic Complex, beat UCCS 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.
