DENVER, Colo. – The box score doesn't always tell the full story.
That was the case when the Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team played No. 9 Colorado School of Mines on Monday evening at the Regency Athletic Complex. Mines (13-1-0, 10-0-0 and first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) tallied 28 shots and 16 on goal to MSU Denver's 12 and six, but the Roadrunners (7-7-0, 6-4-0) carried a 1-0 lead deep into the game before the Orediggers broke through for a goal in the 86
th minute and eventually won with a goal in the 95
th minute.
"That's a hard loss against a really good team," MSU Denver head coach
Jeremy Tittle said after the match. "We were very good tonight. We had our own chances to be able to close the game out. Our attacking and defending continues to get better.
"Against a good team like that, we saw a good defensive performance in a lot of ways. We need to be a little more savvy and we're getting a lot of experience playing against good teams with a relatively young team of our own."
Though Mines held the first-half advantage in shots, 12-5, and shots on goal, 6-3, it was MSU Denver freshman
Bryan Amouyal (Ashdod, Israel/Mekif Tet) who scored the lone goal in the first period. In the 40
th minute, Amouyal corralled the ball in the box and fired a rocket past Orediggers goalkeeper Drew Johnson to give the Roadrunners a lead they would hold for 46 more minutes.
Amouyal's goal was the first allowed by Mines in seven matches, as the Orediggers had posted six straight shutouts from Sept. 23 to Oct. 12. He is now tied with fellow freshman
Jaime Gutierrez (Aurora, Colo./Aurora West College Prep Academy) for second on the team with four goals, and his 31 shots and 14 shots on goal are team-leading totals.
With the clock winding down in the second half, Mines launched a dangerous attack as Oredigger John Haist controlled the ball deep into the left side of the MSU Denver box. Chipping it into the air, he found the head of teammate Tristan Semelsberger, who punched it in to tie things up.
The momentum shifted, and the Orediggers stayed on the offensive in the overtime period. In the 95
th minute, it was Haist's 15
th goal of the season that proved to be the game-winner for Mines. Haist floated the ball over MSU Denver goalkeeper
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens), and it landed just out of Tanner's reach to break the hearts of the Roadrunners and their fans.
Not to be lost in the heartbreaking defeat was Tanner's stellar performance. The senior goalkeeper accumulated 13 saves in the loss, including a number of impressive stops. Meanwhile, Amouyal supplied much of the Roadrunners' offensive firepower, taking five shots and putting three on frame.
While the loss broke MSU Denver's four-game winning streak, the Roadrunners are keeping their heads held high. At 7-7-0 overall and 6-4-0 in conference play, MSU Denver currently sits fifth in the RMAC table.
"We're in a good spot," captain
Danny Bautista (Denver, Colo./North) said after the match. "We can learn from this and move on. This shows we can compete with anyone on any given day."
MSU Denver travels to crosstown rival Regis on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. MT matchup with the Rangers before heading to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play UCCS at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Regis is in third place in the conference, while UCCS is just below MSU Denver in the RMAC table in sixth.
