Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team defeated CSU-Pueblo 10-8 in its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game of the season.
Senior
Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park H.S.) started at pitcher in game one for the Roadrunners.
Both teams were quick to get the game rolling, both scoring in the first inning. Following a 1-0 Thunderwolves lead in the top of the first, the Roadrunners strung together a series of hits to steal the lead. Seniors Donny Ortiz Jr.,
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) and
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) all hit singles to tie the game up at one. A sac-fly from junior
Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) would score the second run for the Roadrunners to take a 2-1 lead.
The score remained in favor of the Roadrunners until the fourth inning when CSU-Pueblo exploded scoring 5 runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead.
The next several innings belonged to the Roadrunners scoring three total runs through the sixth and seventh while allowing one from the Thunderwolves making the score 8-5.
The game took a turn for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the eighth when senior
Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) hit a triple down the right line to score three runs for the Roadrunners, allowing his team to take a 9-8 lead. The Roadrunners would score one more run in the inning when Ortiz hit one up the middle to send Kennedy home and put MSU Denver on top 10-8 going into the final inning.
Senior
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) went to the mound for the Roadrunners in the final inning and threw three quick outs to earn the save and give the Roadrunners the 10-8 victory.
The Roadrunners and Thunderwolves will continue play tomorrow in a double header scheduled for a 12 noon start at the Regency Athletic Complex.
