Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team swept its series against Chadron State with two 3-0 wins against the Eagles on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners improved to 23-19 overall and 18-10 in conference. The Eagles dropped to 11-24 overall and 9-16 in the RMAC.
The Roadrunners got off to a great start following a quick three out inning on the defensive side. Sophomore
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) led off the bottom of the first with a double and would go on to be scored on a sacrifice bunt from junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.), taking a 1-0 lead.
The next bit of offense from either side didn't come till the bottom of the fifth when junior
Jasmine Wessel (Thornton, CO/Horizon High School) and senior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) led off the inning with singles to reach base for the Roadrunners. Freshman
Destinee Lopez (La Verne, Calif. /Bonita H.S.) stepped in as a pinch runner for Wessel and was able to steal third and advance Espinoza to second. Lopez would score on a Eagles pass ball and Espinoza on a ground out from from Sansburn to extend the lead to 3-0.
Sophomore pitcher
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) held the Eagles to zero hits through to the sixth inning when a single through the left side would be the first hit of the game. However, McGhee and the Roadrunners defense would complete the second shutout of the series to take the 3-0 win.
The Roadrunners struck first in the second game as well, putting up a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles strung together some promising offense in the top of the third inning, loading the bases with one out. But the Roadrunners defense came up big again converting a double play to make it out of the inning without the Eagles breaking the score.
MSU Denver put up one more run in the third and fourth while continuing to hold the Eagles scoreless to take its second 3-0 win of the day to sweep the four game series.
Sansburn led the Roadrunners from the plate with three hits on the day and two RBIs.
The Roadrunners will travel to Black Hills State next weekend for a four game series.
