@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners Roll Past New Mexico Highlands

Two goals for Banks gives her share of national lead with seven

DENVER – Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) continued her goal-scoring prowess with two more Friday night, but that was only half the total for Metropolitan State University of Denver in a 4-0 win over New Mexico Highlands.

Banks is now tied for the NCAA Division II lead with seven goals in just five games. She led the Roadrunners in goals last season – with six. Her single-season career best is eight.

"It feels surreal," Banks said. "But we've got a lot of work to do."

Banks scored with 33:03 left in the first half, putting a header into the upper left corner of the goal off a Jessica Mooney (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) corner kick.

She scored 25:10 later with a bullet from the right corner of the 18-yard box.

"Reigna is having a blast, and I think she is because she really loves her teammates," MSU Denver coach Tracy Chao said.

Banks has 27 career goals and needs two more to reach the top 10 in school history. She has scored once in each of the first five games.

No. 11 MSU Denver (3-1-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC) also scored on Paloma Teran's (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) first career goal and on Gabriella Gamboa's (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) fourth of the season while playing the league opener at the Regency Athletic Complex.

"We really wanted to make our home impossible for other people to play at," Banks said. "It feels good to come out and not just win, but dominate."

Mooney had two assists for MSU Denver, which had a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. New Mexico Highlands dropped to 0-4 overall in its league opener.

The Roadrunners play host to No. 23 Colorado State-Pueblo (3-1-1, 0-1) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The ThunderWolves lost 3-0 Friday night to preseason No. 3 University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.

"There's always things we can sharpen up on," Chao said. "Pueblo has a good, solid team. You can expect a really, quality game."
