@MSUDenverMSOC: Roadrunners Find Offensive Groove in 4-0 Triumph over Colorado Christian

Coking, three freshmen score as MSU Denver outshoots CCU, 28-2

DENVER – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) found its groove in an offensive onslaught against Colorado Christian (0-4, 0-1 RMAC) on Friday, outshooting the Cougars 28-2 and putting 12 shots on frame to the Cougars' one. Senior Jacob Coking (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) scored his second goal of the season while three MSU Denver freshmen scored the first goal of their MSU Denver careers as the Roadrunners started conference play with a boom, winning 4-0.

MSU Denver head coach Jeremy Tittle was impressed with the Roadrunners' well-rounded play on Friday afternoon at the Regency Athletic Complex.

"In the first half we were more offensive," Tittle said. "We were better in the second half in our defending. We need both. In soccer, you've got to have both."

MSU Denver dominated possession from the beginning of the match, and it wasn't long before the Roadrunners found the back of the net. Freshman Benjamin Brill (Bruchmuhlbach-Miesau, Germany/Staatliches Heinrich-Heine Gymnasium Kaiserslauter) deposited the Roadrunners' first goal on a header from a corner kick from Cameron Stopforth (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) in the eighth minute, giving MSU Denver a 1-0 lead.

After a flurry of shots, MSU Denver struck again in the 28th minute as freshman Bryan Amouyal (Ashdod, Israel/Mekif Tet) scored with his left foot after a quick chain of passes from Stopforth and Jaime Gutierrez (Aurora, Colo./Aurora West College Prep Academy). Senior Rafael Muñoz-Vega set up freshman Michael Longtine (Westminster, Colo./Academy of Charter Schools) for a goal about 10 minutes later, as Muñoz-Vega fired a bullet off the hands of CCU goalkeeper Zach Roberts. Longtine formed a one-man cleanup crew for the missed shot, easily finding the back of the net as Roberts was overmatched.

MSU Denver led 3-0 at halftime on the strength of 16 shots (six on goal) while CCU failed to register a single shot. The Cougars tested MSU Denver goalkeeper James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens) just once in the second half, finishing with one shot on goal.

While the Roadrunners' freshmen provided the bulk of the offensive force in the first half, it was the veterans' turn in the second half. Senior Jaydon Moreschini (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo West) lofted a beautiful ball from the right side of the field to fellow senior Jacob Coking (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) on the right side of the pitch. Coking launched a strong drive over the keeper's head to make the score 4-0, which would eventually be the final.

Though he didn't score, Gianni Steijlen (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/Summa College) was a heavy participant in MSU Denver's display of freshman firepower as he led the Roadrunners with five shots. Sophomore Louie Sawaged (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) took four shots, putting two on frame, while Amouyal also took four. Coking and junior Yannick Schad (Munich, Germany/Theodolinden-Gymnasium) added three apiece.

Altogether, MSU Denver put together an impressive performance on both ends that builds momentum going into a tough matchup with Dixie State on Sunday. The match will begin at 12 p.m. MT from the Regency Athletic Complex as the Roadrunners look to continue their strong start to RMAC play. Sunday's match forms the first half of another MSU Denver soccer doubleheader, as the No. 11 women's squad faces off against No. 23 CSU-Pueblo at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
