DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis scored twice in the first nine minutes, including the first of two goals by Bar Hazut, and went on to a 5-2 victory Friday over Metropolitan State University of Denver in men's soccer.
Marshall Metzger's header just 4:46 into the match gave the Skyhawks an early lead and Hazut's first goal with 36:57 left made it 2-0.
Hazut and Ryan Lee each scored two goals for the Skyhawks (4-0-2 overall, 2-0-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).
MSU Denver (3-4, 2-1) pulled within 2-1 on
Bryan Amouyal's (Ashdod, Israel/Mekif Tet) second goal of the season – on an assist from
Jaime Gutierrez (Aurora, Colo./Aurora West College Prep Academy) – with 30:53 still left in the first half. The score held for over 20 minutes, and then Fort Lewis' Lee made it 3-1 on his first goal, which came with 10:23 left in the half.
The Roadrunners' second score was on an own goal after a floating shot by Gutierrez on a windy day. That made it 4-2 with just under 30 minutes to play, but MSU Denver could get no closer.
"Games can be decided on mistakes," MSU Denver coach
Jeremy Tittle said. "Today, Fort Lewis capitalized on a few of our mistakes and competed to the final whistle to protect the lead."
MSU Denver continues its Western Slope road trip Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at 17
th-ranked Colorado Mesa (3-0-2, 1-0-1 before Friday's late game).
"There are a lot of takeaways from this match," Tittle said. "We have to quickly bounce back and have a good performance on Sunday."
