@MSUDenverVB: Roadrunners Sweep Mountaineers in Gunnison

MSU Denver takes advantage of high-error play from Western State in easy win

GUNNISON, Colo. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team (8-5, 4-1 RMAC) picked up its fourth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win in five tries on Friday night, easily defeating Western State Colorado (1-13, 0-6 RMAC) on the road in three sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-12).

"We served and passed well tonight which allowed us to control the match," MSU Denver head coach Jenny Glenn said. "I was very pleased with our composure and ability to weather an emotional match environment."

The Roadrunners dominated in every facet of play against the Mountaineers. MSU Denver outhit Western State Colorado, .235 to -.051, marking the first time an MSU Denver opponent has hit below .000 in a match since Sept. 13, 2014 when #5 Central Missouri hit -.008 in an MSU Denver sweep. Western State had more errors than kills (23 errors, 18 kills) on Friday night, while the Roadrunners managed 37 kills and committed just 13 errors. In the third set, the Mountaineers hit a measly -.125 while scoring only 12 points. The Roadrunners are now 13-0 during Glenn's tenure when an opponent hits less than .100.

Junior Alyssa Kelling (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead), who has been a stable force in the middle all year for Glenn's squad, led MSU Denver with nine kills on Friday while staying out of the errors category on the stat sheet for a .474 hitting percentage. Kelling, who entered the week ranked eighth in the RMAC with a .291 hitting percentage on the season, raised that mark to .306 on Friday night. Nine kills tied Kelling's second-best total of the season.

Sophomore Lyric Hebert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) led the Roadrunners once again with 17 digs, while Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit), Stephanie Laraway (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) and Kayla White (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) each chipped in six kills to go with Kelling's nine. Freshman Avaline Lai (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) only saw the court in the final set, but amassed four blocks and accounted for three of the Roadrunners' first four points of the frame.

MSU Denver is on the road again tomorrow evening, heading to Grand Junction, Colo., for a visit to Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks swept Chadron State on Friday night to move to 10-4 (5-1 RMAC). Set-by-Set Breakdown

Set One: Western State Colorado scored the first three points of the match and jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Glenn took a timeout to help her squad regain composure. From there, MSU Denver went on a 17-7 run to take control of the frame at 19-14. Three straight attack errors by Mountaineer Kathleen Kasel made it 22-15 in favor of the Roadrunners, and a Kayla White (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) kill eventually sealed the frame for MSU Denver at 25-18.

Set Two: The second set was all MSU Denver, as the Roadrunners picked up a quick 4-0 lead thanks to two early kills from Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View). Western State got within two at 7-5 but would never get closer. A five-point run by MSU Denver featuring two Sturges kills made the score 15-7. The Roadrunners scored five of the last six points in the set to win, 25-13.

Set Three: Again, the Roadrunners scored the first four points of the frame thanks to the play of Avaline Lai (Boulder, Colo./Fairview). It wasn't long before another big run put MSU Denver up big at 13-3, putting the set out of reach. The Roadrunners would go on to tie their biggest set win of the season at 25-12, sealing the sweep. Sophomore setter Mikaela Kubiak (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) saw the first action of her MSU Denver career in the final frame.
