DENVER – Sometimes all you can do is shrug your shoulders and shake your head.
Ollie Haines' goal with 11 seconds left lifted Regis to a 2-1 victory Friday night over Metropolitan State University of Denver in men's soccer at the Regency Athletic Complex.
Haines dribbled his way to an opening and then lifted a shot from well outside the 18-yard box that went over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens). It then hit the crossbar near the upper left corner of the goal and bounced nearly straight down, but bounced behind the line.
"He hit a worldie," Tittle said. "It's a 1 in 50, 1 in 100 type of shot that went in. You love it when it goes in for you, but it stinks when it goes against you. They got a world-class goal."
Regis improved to 1-2 in the non-conference game. The teams will play a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Oct. 19.
"We played well tonight," Tittle said. "We felt like we could've been better inside 12 to 15 yards on both sides of the field. We had a lot of quality chances where we could have put some distance between us early in the game."
MSU Denver (1-2) appeared to control play for much of the first half, and it finally paid off with
Gianni Steijlen's (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/Summa College) first career goal.
Rafael Munoz-Vega played a beautiful cross into the box, which
Juancarlos Chavez, Jr. (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview), volleyed off the crossbar. Steijlen was ready for the rebound, and buried it from just outside the 6 with 8:57 left in the half.
"JC's run and the timing of his run was great and got us the first chance at it, and then Gianni switched on to get the rebound," Tittle said. "That was a quality goal. It took a big group effort.
"And we just missed it one or two other times."
But the lead lasted only 1:45.
Regis' Porter Milner rolled a free kick into the box and Freddie Swales redirected it with his right foot from the 6, tucking it into the lower left corner.
MSU Denver had the advantage in shots on goal 5-3.
"We're seeing great progress in guys," Tittle said.
MSU hits the road Sunday for a noon MDT contest with 15
th-ranked Fort Hays State (Kan.).
