GOLDEN, Colo. – First-place Colorado School of Mines scored two first-half goals and held on for a 2-0 victory over MSU Denver on Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men's soccer.
Ben Overholt scored his fifth goal of the season at the 27:20 mark, and Jason Zobott scored his fourth of the season at 42:07 as the Orediggers improved to 9-2-2 overall and 7-0-2 in RMAC play. The Orediggers are receiving votes in the coaches' national poll.
"We probably played the best that we've played all year in the first half," Metropolitan State University of Denver coach
Hank Lewis said. "We didn't give them many chances, we just had a couple of slip-ups.
"I really felt like we made the errors that allowed them to score their goals. We had long stretches of great play, playing the way we know we can, and it's unfortunate to not get a better result. The guys' spirits are good. They are appropriately disappointed, but they also know they put in a good effort."
MSU Denver, which played Colorado School of Mines to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 13, was outshot 16-9 and was outdistanced 7-4 in shots on goal.
Jaime Gutierrez put three shots on goal for the Roadrunners (5-7-1, 3-5-1).
Alessandro Gentile had five saves.
"It's never fun to lose, but I feel better about the way we played tonight than I did last week when we won against Adams State," Lewis said. "We had a great response. You would have never known we were down 2-0. It was great to see the fight and the connection that our team has, the way guys are willing to keep playing and fighting for each other."
MSU Denver plays again Sunday, traveling for a 11 a.m. game at South Dakota Mines.
